MUSC 110 Music Appreciation (3)
A broad study of the history of Western music from the beginning to modern times. Emphasis on the six main musical style periods: Medieval, Renaissance, Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Contemporary. The study includes lectures, reading and listening.


MUSC 150 Music in Ministry (3)
An introductory level course in Church music. The basic elements of song leading, including music fundamentals, organizing a song service, worship leading, and reading the musical score. Other areas of study include music in the Bible and Church history, the Church music program, and problems germane to music in the Church.

Beginning Choral Conducting Techniques. Beginning Rehearsal Techniques for Choir and Praise Worship Team.

MUSC 170 Conducting and Choral Development Techniques in Protestant Christian Churches II (3)
Advanced Choral Conducting Techniques. Advanced Rehearsal Techniques for Choir and Praise Worship Team. Beginning Ensemble Conducting Techniques. Prerequisite: MUSC 160 with a ‘B’ or higher grade.

MUSIC 210 Biblical principles of Christian Worship in the Old and New Testaments (3)
A Study of the theology, institutions and practice of worship in Scripture. This course explores the ways in which biblical models can inspire worship renewal and building of an indigenous worship culture for the Vietnamese Christian Protestant Churches today. Special emphases include: (a) investigating the relationship between spirituality and corporate worship; (b) addressing the concepts of sacred time and sacred space; and (c) examining the place of the Psalms in Hebrew and Christian worship.

MUSC 230 Historical Development of Christian Worship (3)
A survey of Christian worship through the centuries. This course will expose students to worship in every period of Christian history in both the Eastern and Western Churches. Special attention is given to exploring historical shifts in how Christian people have understood God, the Church, salvation and the Church-culture intersection with respect to worship.

MUSC 250 Piano Accompaniment Techniques for Protestant Christian Worship Services (3)
Hymnal Harmonic Analysis techniques. Improvisation techniques of piano, left hand. Sight Reading techniques for Keyboard players. Requirements: (a) Able to play hymn melodies relatively easily with the right hand; (b) Able to play the following major and minor scales: C, G, D, F and Bb; (c) Able to play the following major and minor arpeggio: C, G, D, E, and Bb; (d) Know basic concept of triad.

MUSC 320 Leading Worship (3)
A course is designed for those planning on leading corporate worship in the local Church. It has a practical emphasis (students will lead and evaluate chapel services) as well as a Biblical study of worship philosophies.

MUSC 340 Choral Conducting (3)
Emphasis is placed on developing confidence in directing an adult choir. Conducting methods are studied and applied to practical situations. Musical terminology is included in this study. Each student will prepare and direct an anthem with the School Chorale.

MUSC 360 Hymnology (3)
This is a study devoted to the development of hymns, their authors and composers. Discussion of sources for texts and tunes and an analysis of styles and forms will be presented. Some work in hymn composition will be presented.
